Access to the boot is compromised and not all models come with electronic stability control.



Performance

The five petrol engines all rev keenly and the zingy 1.6 is the pick of the bunch. There are two turbocharged 2.0s, which supply hot hatch pace. The 79- and 99bhp 1.7 diesels provide a broad spread of power, but don't have the punch of the 118- and 148bhp 1.9 diesels. The three-door model comes with all but the 197bhp 2.0-litre petrol.

Ride & handling

The Astra is one of the most enjoyable cars in this class to drive. The steering is responsive and provides crisp direction changes, while the Astra feels nimble through bends and grips well. The ride is supple over most surfaces, although sportier versions have a firmer set-up that isn't quite as forgiving.

Refinement

This is one of the Astra's strengths. On all surfaces road noise is impressively subdued, while wind noise is also kept to a low level. The petrol engines rev smoothly and don't become harsh when pressed. You can tell which fuel the diesel engines use, but they settle to a muted hum at motorway speed.

Buying & owning

Entry-level versions are competitively priced but miss out on key equipment. More powerful diesels and higher-spec models look rather pricey, but come with lots of kit. Running costs are reasonable. Big discounts are available, but you will need them to offset the below-average residual values.

Quality & reliability

The Astra's build quality appears to be first-rate. Most of the plastics and materials that occupants come into contract with are sturdy and soft to the touch, lending an air of quality that was absent in its predecessor. Vauxhall has a reputation for strong, reliable engines and we see no reason for this to slip with the latest Astra.

Safety & security

Every Astra model has front and side airbags and anti-lock brakes. Only Club models and above have curtain airbags, while a stability control system is optional for all but the SRi. Security provision matches the best in class.

Behind the wheel

The Astra has an excellent driving position thanks to ratchet seat-height adjustment and a two-way moveable steering wheel. Visibility is very good in the five-door, but dreadful to the rear in the three-door Sport Hatch. The centre console has too many small, fiddly controls for the stereo and heating.

Space & practicality

The Astra isn't as roomy as the biggest cars in this class, but will suit most buyer's needs. Headroom is good all round and, although there's less rear legroom than in some rivals, there's still enough for two tall adults. The boot is a decent size and shape, but the large tail lights mean the entrance is narrow.

Equipment

Every Astra has electric front windows, remote central locking and electronic power steering, and all but the base trim have a CD player. Club trim adds alloy wheels, electric mirrors and air-con. Design adds leather trim and electric rear windows and Elite spec includes climate control and cruise control. SXi models have lowered sports suspension and sportier trim details. The Sport Hatch starts from SXi trim.
