Performance

The 108bhp 1.5-litre turbodiesel is very frugal and is in the lowest company car tax band for diesels. Those wishing for more can choose a 128bhp or a 148bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel, or two 2.0-litre petrol engines, one of which is a turbo. Two 2.0-litre units are exclusive to the GT: a 202bhp turbocharged petrol and a 178bhp diesel. The diesel is also impressively flexible, whereas the petrol is lifeless at low revs.

Ride & handling

The Laguna's steering is lightly weighted to aid low-speed manoeuvrability, but it's frustratingly vague in corners. More front-end grip would also be welcome and, while the stiff suspension keeps body movements tightly controlled, there's too much jiggle and thump over patchy surfaces. GT versions have four-wheel steering (called 'Active Drive Chassis'), but you're only really aware of the benefit when you push the car hard.

Refinement

The Laguna shuts out most wind and road noise, and the engines are relaxed and hushed on the motorway. However, the suspension lets the side down because it thuds noisily over bumps. It's also a shame that Renault didn't make the gearshift, clutch and brakes feel more taut.

Buying & owning

The Laguna's leasing rates are competitive, while low emissions strengthen its appeal for company car drivers, particularly if you opt for the 1.5-litre turbodiesel. The standard three-year warranty covers 100,000 miles, but resale values are weak. Service intervals are variable, depending on how hard each car is driven. Expect around 18,000 miles between services.

Quality & reliability

There can be few complaints about the quality of the interior. Plush materials compliment an attractive dash design, while slick switchgear and a solid assembly add to the upmarket feel. On the downside, Renault has a poor record in customer satisfaction surveys.

Safety & security

The Laguna is as safe as any car in its class. It achieved a maximum five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests, and you get six airbags (rear chest airbags are optional) and electronic stability control as standard. Deadlocks and an alarm protect it against thieves, and the doors automatically lock above 5mph to further boost security.

In The Cabin

Behind the wheel

The Laguna's relatively low-cut window line and large glass area make it easy to judge the car's length and width. However, its front seats aren't particularly supportive and the steering wheel could do with a wider range of movement. Most of the dashboard controls are logically positioned, but the switches for the climate control are fiddly.

Space & practicality

Space is not an issue up front because there's plenty of head-, leg- and shoulder room. However, the Laguna's sweeping roofline impinges on rear headroom, and rivals such as the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat offer far more kneeroom. The boot is rather shallow, too, but you can fold the rear seats forward to extend the loadbay.

Equipment

All models have alloy wheels, air-con, four electric windows, remote locking and keyless entry. Dynamique adds part-leather sports seats and cruise control. Initiale provides electrically adjustable leather seats, sat-nav, front and rear parking sensors, xenon headlights and metallic paint.
