Performance

The entry-level 1.2-litre petrol engine struggles to shift the Clio, but the Turbo 100 version is strong, smooth and responsive. The 1.5-litre diesels are flexible, with the 105bhp version particularly so.

Ride & handling

The Clio is one of the largest superminis and also one of the best to drive. Its suspension provides an excellent blend of comfort and control with plenty of grip. It's just a shame that the lightweight steering, which makes it so easy to pilot around town, fails to develop enough feel as speeds increase.

Refinement

Some suspension clatter can be heard on rougher surfaces, but the Clio is generally very quiet, making it a great long distance companion. The 74bhp 1.2 engine can sound strained at higher speeds, but its other petrol versions are hushed with the diesels amongst the quietest around. The gearshift has a long, languid action and doesn't like to be rushed.

Buying & owning

The Clio is one of the priciest superminis around, but massive discounts are available on the list price, especially through internet brokers. Most models are affordable to own; the diesels are incredibly frugal and the 1.2 Turbo 100 model uses less fuel and emits less carbon dioxide than many of its rivals. Resale values aren't strong, though - most models will be worth less than 40% of their original list price after three years.

Quality & reliability

For perceived quality (the impression you get when you open the doors and touch or look at the interior) the Clio is as good as small cars come, although it's a shame that cheaper models don't get the soft-touch trim of more expensive cars. Most mechanical parts are proven and shouldn't give trouble.

Safety & security

The Clio scored a maximum five stars in Euro NCAP crash tests. Even basic models have four airbags; most have six and some have eight. All feature anti-lock brakes and stability control is an affordable option across the range. Deadlocks and anti-drill locks are fitted to serve as barriers to thieves.

Behind the wheel

The Clio offers excellent all-round vision and has simple heater controls, but the stereo is fiddly. The steering wheel moves up and down, but reach adjustment is only standard on pricey Dynamique S and Initiale cars - it's available as part of a pack that includes keyless entry and starting on Dynamique models.

Space & practicality

There's plenty of room to seat four adults, and it's easy to get in and out of the back, even on three-door models. The boot is a good size, too, although the rear seats could be easier to fold because you have to pop up the bases before dropping the backrests. Even then you're left with a load area that has a big step in it.

Equipment

Entry-level Extreme models have a CD player and electric front windows. Expression adds cosmetic upgrades, electric door mirrors and automatic headlights and wipers, but air-con costs extra. Dynamique trim adds alloy wheels and air-conditioning as standard, along with a soft-touch dashboard and leather steering wheel and gearknob trim. Dynamique S trim has part-leather seats, while Initiale adds loads of big car features, including leather upholstery, cruise control and rear parking sensors.
